Getting Your Workout and Having Fun Doing It

People have every excuse for not exercising. Luckily, there are activities that mix family and social life right into your workout, so you have time for all three.

The truth is, most of us don't do enough for our physical fitness. Many people see working out as a hassle, another chore to somehow fit into their busy schedules. The good news is, it doesn't have to be that way. No matter what the excuse, exercise could be easier if it was embraced as an opportunity to have fun and strengthen personal relationships. Partner-oriented activities like kayaking, rock climbing, tennis, or even just partnered jogging can provide a fun way to get your workout, enjoy the great outdoors, and bond with friends and family all at once.

Water Activities

Fun is amphibious, so why limit yourself to the land when looking for something to add to your active lifestyle?

  • Renting or investing in a double kayak or canoe is a great way to get quality time with a family member, significant other, or friend while you both build upper body and abdominal strength on the water.
  • Taking wakeboarding or water skiing lessons together with another person could be a unique and adrenaline-pumped bonding experience.
  • Rafting in white water with a professional guide can be a fun and exhilarating ride.

Rock Climbing

Why not try going vertical on your next workout? Climbing is ideal for partners and small groups because it requires people to work together, building trust and confidence.

  • Roped climbing is more accessible than it looks. Many indoor climbing gyms offer lessons at reasonable rates, showing you the ropes if you're a total beginner. Guided outdoor trips are also available. In either case, you and your partner will be working together to get up the rocks.
  • Climbing low to the ground, with a specially-designed foam pad to soften your fall, is called bouldering. Because of its inherent intensity, bouldering is usually more difficult than roped climbing, but requires less equipment. Your partner's role will be that of a spotter, making sure you fall cleanly on the mat when you slip off the rocks. In bouldering, vigilance is key for the spotter and focus and trust are key for the climber.

Raquet Sports

Tennis, raquetball, badminton--they all use raquets, and they all require two or more people. Partner up and get fit while getting your game on! Badminton has something of a reputation for being a "lighter" sport than the other two, but make no mistake: an intense volley can have you doing hard sprints back and forth until you're completely out of breath.

Getting Your Workout On Land

Jogging isn't the only partnered land exercise. There are lots of ways to get your workout, so have fun with it.

  • Rollerblading and cycling are fun ways to get some cardiovascular exercise and increase your lower-body fitness. If you're in a pair, why not get creative and rent a bicycle built for two?
  • Indoor ice skating is also a unique activity option that's ideal for couples. Check online if ice rinks with open skating exist in your area.
  • For a truly pulse-pounding experience with family, friends, or partner, try out a few matches of paintball. Zip through the woods and hide in bunkers dogding splattering paintballs as you hunt down the enemy team with CO2-powered paint guns. The intensity of a good paintball match is something you'll be sure to remember.

So there you have it--working out doesn't have to be a chore, and it doesn't have to happen in place of your social life or your leisure time. With the right activities, you can blend them all together to ensure that you have more than enough time for all three, even with your fast-paced lifestyle. Whether it be by land or river, earth or sea, racquet or climbing harness, there's a social workout out there for everybody. All you've got to do is go find it!
