Working out at home does not have to be the same boring workout everyday. As an alternative to hopping on the treadmill one more time, pop in an exercise video such as Denise Austin's Blast Away 10 Pounds DVD.

Denise Austin

Being the self proclaimed “America’s Fitness Expert” has led Denise Austin to sell over 20 million exercise videos and two fitness books. She is a consultant to the President’s Counsel on Physical Fitness and has 82 videos under her belt so far.

Blast Away 10 Pounds

Denise Austin’s Blast Away 10 Pounds DVD includes two 20 minute workouts, one for kickboxing and one for interval training. The DVD is chaptered and includes the following information:

  1. Main Titles/Introduction
  2. Denise’s Kickboxing Tips
  3. Kickboxing Blast Off
  4. Rev Up the Metabolism

Denise’s Kickboxing Tips

Denise gives safety cues and tips for her kickboxing workout, focused on correct form for the punches and kicks.

Kickboxing Blast Off

The workout starts with a warm up of punching and twisting the upper body, with forward and back walking. It is fast paced but easy to follow. The abs are worked out indirectly; with the kicking and twisting the core area should be kept tight at all times. Squats and side jabs are included as well as simulating jumping rope. Following Denise Austin exactly, this would be an intermediate workout as she includes some plyometrics (fast, powerful jumping movements with both feet off of the ground at once). The workout is not suitable for a beginner, as the stamina required to complete the routine would probably be lacking in a beginner level exerciser. Denise doesn’t include a lot of instruction in the video that a beginner might need. The workout is medium to high impact with the plyometrics, jumping jacks, and bouncing. A cool down stretch is included at the end of the kickboxing workout.

Rev Up the Metabolism

"Rev Up the Metabolism" is an interval training workout, using light weights and cardio bursts to burn more calories. The warm up includes kicking, jabbing and punching, side lunges and squats with basic side to side aerobic moves.

  • The first interval includes lateral raises, upright rows, and front raises which are followed by a cardio interval of jumping rope, boxing and kicking.
  • The second interval includes three variations of bicep curls followed by a cardio interval of basic aerobic moves.
  • The third interval includes back rows and tricep kickbacks followed by jumping rope, more jabbing and kicking moves, and jumping jacks.

As this workout is medium to high impact with the bouncing and jumping jacks, it would be most appropriate for an intermediate exerciser. A cool down stretch follows the interval workout.

Summary

The Blast Away 10 Pounds DVD would be best for an intermediate to advanced exerciser. Denise Austin does not give a lot of instruction, so watching the exercise DVD before completing it may be helpful.
