Denise Austin burns fat and calories with this intermediate interval training cardiovascular workout.

Interval training is an effective way to burn fat and calories. Adding light weights to the workout increases the intensity leading to more calories burned.

Denise Austin

Denise Austin has had her own exercise show on television and has been a member of the President’s Counsel on Physical Fitness. She has sold over 20 million exercise videos and has also written two books on nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle.

Boot Camp Total Body Blast

Workouts for the Denise Austin Boot Camp Total Body Blast include

  • Cardio Interval
  • Strength
  • Flexibility

Cardio Interval

The cardio interval workout begins with a warm up with movements that include step touches, lateral lunges, squats and knee lifts.

Intervals

The interval portions of the cardio workout include 30 seconds of intense bursts of exercise. The movements include shuffling with squats and jumps, lateral bounding, jumping jacks and side kicks.

Cardio

While not doing intervals, Denise Austin moves non-stop. The workout DVD is high energy and there are many lunges, kick-boxing movements and knee raises worked in between the intervals.

Strength Workout

The warm up on this is short and includes movements that don’t necessarily make for a good warm up. Lunges and planks are best done when the body is more warmed up.

The workout consists of short sessions of strength training interspersed with cardio work. The strength movements include squats and lunges with arm movements of bicep curls and overhead presses, kickboxing movements and floor work. The floor work is made up of planks and other abdominal exercises, and exercises for the glutes that also include the dumbbells.

Strength Training

Denise uses light dumbbells throughout the strength routine. The movements are faced paced and the strength intervals are rather short. To build muscle and increase strength it would be better to use heavier weights and more exercises for each body part. This workout is more effective for burning fat and calories than actually increasing muscular strength. For an exerciser looking for a faster paced boot camp workout mainly trying to burn calories, this exercise DVD could be effective.

Intermediate Workout

Due to the high impact moves in this workout (bouncing, jumping) it would be best suited to an intermediate level exerciser. A beginner or first time exerciser could do the workout at a slower pace, eliminating the jumping movements until their body is ready for them.

Denise sometimes misses cuing opportunities where more instruction would be beneficial. Her positive attitude and enthusiasm are inviting to some but turn off others. Try one of her other workout videos to see if the exercise is appealing: Get Fit Daily Dozen, or Blast Away the Pounds Indoor Walk.
