Denise Austin Yoga Body Burn Workout DVD ReviewThree Fat Burning Yoga Exercise Routines Plus a Relaxing Stretch
Yoga is great exercise for stretching and strengthening the body. Working out at home without having to pay for a gym or get there is great for stress reduction.
Denise Austin’s many exercise DVDs, television shows and books have created a huge fan base for her. Her DVDs have matured as she has. Austin's Yoga Body Burn DVD might just be the right home yoga workout for many beginner to intermediate home exercisers. Yoga Body BurnThe DVD is broken down into four different workouts
Yoga BurnThe Yoga Burn session is 20 minutes long. It moves through several series after the warm-up. She moves through a Sun Salutation series including plank pose, chaturanga, and upward facing dog. On the DVD cover, these are claimed to be Vinyasa poses. The word Vinyasa means “breath synchronized movement”. Denise does not focus on the breathing during these poses. Breathing instruction before the start of the routine would be helpful. Yoga LegsYoga Legs is a 10 minute leg-focused series beginning with stretching movements. Denise demonstrates several standing stretches and poses, then moves to the floor to do bridge and tabletop variations, ending with seated stretches and forward bends. There is not much here to constitute an actual leg workout, the strengthening work is minimal. It does flow well, and stretches the lower body. Yoga AbsYoga Abs is a 10 minute abdominal strengthening workout consisting of several different ab strengtheners and openers, including
Yoga RelaxYoga Relax is a ten minute, low key flowing stretch. The back and legs are mainly stretched in this session, with some chest openers included. This series flows well and would be appropriate for all levels. Austin talks all the way through but her voice can be turned off after choosing this workout. CustomizeYoga Body Burn can be customized to do 1, 2, 3, or all 4 of the yoga routines. Each of the workouts can be done with Denise Austin’s voice instruction or with music only. This is a great option for those who do DVDs over and over and no longer need the voice instruction. It’s nice to still have music to listen to without having to turn the volume off completely. Equipment NeededThis video requires no exercise equipment, can be done in comfortable clothing and bare feet in front of the television. A yoga mat is used in the exercise DVD, but not required. A carpeted floor would be more comfortable than a hardwood floor if no mat is available. Fat BurningThe claims on the DVD case that this is specifically “fat burning yoga” are questionable. The heart rate may be raised a bit, but calories burned will be minimal as compared to a cardiovascular workout or circuit type weight training workout. If fat burning is the goal, an exerciser would be better served by choosing a different DVD. SummaryAs a yoga instructor in this DVD, Austin offers little information on the poses, with no suggestions on getting into, or staying in, each pose. For those familiar with yoga poses this would be fine. The pacing is on the faster side and the poses are not explained thoroughly if at all. Learning yoga through a more detailed yoga video would be more effective for one wanting to know the poses. For those that have done yoga before, and are familiar with the poses, this would be a beginner/intermediate routine. The poses flow well and are not too difficult for those familiar with them. Overall it is enjoyable and can be effective for stretching, but is probably not going to be a huge calorie burner.
