With features like trip timers and health management software, pedometers can make walking interesting.

You've decided to begin walking for weight loss and fitness using a pedometer to record your progress. This could be fun as there are many features to choose from when selecting a pedometer. Obviously, the most important feature will be the step counter, but you don’t have to stop there. Pedometers come with the ability to perform many functions and provide a wide variety of information.

You can get a pedometer that will measure and record all information you determine pertinent to your success. Pedometers are small in size but can pack in a large amount information while being fun to use. Think of your pedometer as your training partner, it’s functions offer physical as well as mental motivation and stimulation.

Below are some of the features that are offered on pedometers (features vary by pedometer):

  • The ability to sense your steps whether worn horizontally, vertically, carried in a pocket, bag or purse.
  • Step counter- most pedometers will count up to 99,999 steps before resetting.
  • Monitor motion via a sensitivity setting that can be set to high or low.
  • Track daily, weekly, monthly or annual progress with health management software. This feedback is designed to help keep you on track while following a healthy, active lifestyle.
  • Record your 7-day activity history allowing you to review your activity over the past 7 days.
  • Display any aerobic movement done continuously for 10 minutes or more.
  • Separate display of time walked over 10 minutes continuously.
  • Convert steps into miles or kilometers traveled.
  • Give estimated calorie and fat expenditure.
  • Keep track of time with a clock and stop watch.
  • Provide a large display for easier reading.
  • Reset automatically at the end of each day.
  • Removable belt clip allows the pedometer to be carried in your pocket.
  • Safety strap can be clipped to clothing or belt to prevent losing.
  • Low battery indicator.
  • Stride length adjustment.

Most people overestimate the distance traveled on foot each day. Using a pedometer is a great way to record an accurate record of your movement and provide motivation. Your pedometer can be as basic as a step counter or as sophisticated as a mini-computer. When selecting a pedometer consider which features you believe will contribute to your success.

Some pedometer will require more technical skill than others, i.e. syncing the pedometer with your computer allowing for tracking daily, weekly, monthly or annual information. You can then gauge progress and set personal goals online.

Walking is simple yet provides many health benefits. Start walking today and make every step count toward your health figuratively and literally!
