The Biggest Loser trainer, Jillian Michaels has created a workout system just for beginners. Her motivating approach to training should inspire anyone to lose weight.

The Jillian Michaels for Beginners – Backside DVD includes six circuit workouts plus interviews with three former The Biggest Loser contestants. NBC's The Biggest Loser trainer Jillian Michaels energetic training style and personality come through in this DVD that will be very encouraging to beginners.

Equipment Needed

The equipment used in the Backside for Beginners workout DVD includes

  • Dumbbells
  • Exercise tubing
  • Small step
  • Chair or bench

Circuits

There are six circuits, each about ten minutes long. Each circuit includes a cardio interval and two resistance exercises, repeated three times. The first circuits work the major backside muscle groups: the back, hamstrings and glutes. The biceps are added in during a middle circuit. In the last two circuits core or abdominal work is added in as well.

Backside

The DVD is appropriately named, as each exercise focuses on muscles on the posterior side of the body: hamstrings, glutes, the back, and biceps. Although the biceps are technically on the front of the arm they are used in all pulling movements that work the back.

Beginners

The DVD is very appropriate for beginners. Jillian Michaels takes the necessary time to explain each movement, what muscle group is being worked, and how it can be done correctly. Rather than just take the exerciser through a quick routine she gives the reasons as to why the workout should be done and how it can benefit the user.

Variations

Jillian gives variations on many of her exercises to make them easier or more difficult. If the cardio interval is a high impact move she gives an alternative move that will be easier on the body for a beginner. She does this for many of the resistance exercises as well. She also gives more difficult variations of the beginner movements to make the workout more challenging for a more advanced exerciser

This is a great workout for beginners; it is slow and gives clear instruction on the workout. An intermediate exerciser may find it challenging for a brief period of time. One obvious downfall to the DVD is that it only covers the backside of the body; one would need to buy a DVD to work the opposing muscle groups as well. There is no warm up or cool down included in the workout, which doesn’t make it quite complete. Any user should be careful to warm up before exercising, complete the workout, and then do a cool down stretch after exercising.
