Running is one of the best forms of exercise for burning calories and fat. Having trouble staying motivated? Here are six ways to make running easier.

It’s one of the best fat burning, calorie blasting workouts around. A thirty minute run can burn anywhere from three hundred to five hundred calories – and the feeling of finishing a hard run is indescribably satisfying. On the other hand, running isn’t easy and it can be difficult to stay motivated. To make the experience a little more pleasant and productive, here are some tips on how to make running easier.

Simple Ways to Make Running Easier

Do It First Thing in the Morning

Yes, it’s difficult to crawl out of bed and lace up the running shoes, but exercising first thing in the morning can actually make running easier. The temperatures are cooler than they will be later in the day, making a summer time run more pleasant. Running early in the morning also boosts energy levels for later in the day. The peace and solitude of running in the cool morning air and watching the sun come up is exhilarating. Plus, it’s good to know it’s out of the way for the day.

Wear Cool Clothing

Perspiration and sweaty clothes can make a run unpleasant. Running is best enjoyed when wearing loose, light clothing. If it’s cooler outside, dress in layers so they can gradually be shed. It’s also best to avoid wearing dark running clothing on a hot summer day. The dark colors will absorb the heat and make a run very uncomfortable

Vary the Route

Running becomes monotonous if the same route is covered every day. Make it a challenge to try a completely different course for each run. Planning a running route each morning can be motivating and the thrill of seeing different sights and sounds keeps it fun. For a different perspective, drive to a new neighborhood, park the car, and start moving. It’s a great way to explore a new area.

Stay Away From Treadmills Whenever Possible

Treadmills are a fast way to take the joy out of running. There’s nothing mentally stimulating about running on a moving platform while staring at a blank wall. Although treadmill running is easier than running outdoors, it’s also less mentally challenging and burns fewer calories because of the lack of factors such as wind resistance. For most people, outdoor runs are more stimulating and satisfying.

Join a Running Club

For those who like the social aspects of exercise, joining a club can make running easier. Most cities have a club where members meet for weekly runs in different locations. It’s a chance to meet new people with the same interest and it helps with focus and motivation. It’s a lot easier to run five miles when it’s done with a group. Find local running clubs by searching the internet or inquiring at sporting goods stores.

Wear the Right Running Shoes

This is one of the most underappreciated ways to make running easier. The right pair of shoes can make an enormous difference in how pleasant and productive a run is and can even reduce the risk of injury. Choose shoes that are specifically designed for running rather than multi-purpose athletic shoes. The extra support and padding that good running shoes have can make all the difference. Get them fitted professionally to ensure the best fit possible. Some athletic shoes stores can analyze a runner’s foot type using a computerized mat which helps with shoe selection. Take advantage of this service if it’s available.

Use these tips to make running easier, but always keep running. It’s one of the best forms of exercise for overall health.
