Water or fluid retention before a period happens because of decrease in progesterone and therefore more progesterone being made, which makes the kidneys retain water.

Almost all women experience this premenstrual syndrome, barring a lucky few. And many have always wondered if there was a solution to this predictable problem of water retention or fluid retention. But first, the basics. Water or fluid retention before a period happens because of decrease in progesterone and therefore more progesterone being made, which in turn makes the kidneys retain more water.

Avoid Salt

The first and foremost method to stop this water retention is to substantially reduce salt intake, or in fact, avoid salt altogether. Salt not only causes water to accumulate inside the body, but also slows down the digestion process that happens before a period. It is important to avoid not just salt in its own physical form but also items that have hidden salt content in them, like soy sauce, salted peanuts, chips, etc. So take a break from salt and see an enormous difference.

Eat More Fruit And Fiber

This is not the only time that one should eat more fruits and fiber, perhaps. But this is definitely a good time to have more fruits and fiber. Fruits and all fiber rich foods like whole wheat, nuts and others give the body a chance to digest faster and also increase roughage in the process. Also, have water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes, and so on that add fresh water to your body and help flush out unwanted water. During periods, it is not uncommon to have stomach aches that one cannot decipher from the regular indigestion and the period pain. Roughage will help reduce one kind of pain and provide lot of relief.

Cool Down The System

Water helps balance all the acidity inside the body, thus cooling it down to a great extent. Also, juices, coconut water, and buttermilk help cool down the body. The first fluid to be consumed in the morning should be water, as this is the one that cleanses the system thoroughly, before one puts in further food.

Physical Activity

Be active the whole month, or at least the days nearing your period. This helps keep the balance of all ingredients inside the body, like sugars, salts and other digestive juices.

Stop Eating Junk Food

Stop eating junk food right away. The high amounts of salts and oils in junk foods make them heavy on bodily systems. Junk foods like chips, wedges, and sodas cause undue bloating because of excessive salts, preservatives and gaseous substances.
