You have decided to hire a personal trainer to get in the best shape of your life. That's great! Unfortunately, not all personal trainers are created equal.
Just because someone has a truckload of credentials to his or her name does not guarantee results. And just because this trainer has a six-pack to die for and perhaps a pair of bulging biceps does not mean that his or her methods and technique are right for you. Personal training can be expensive, but it is an investment in your health. It will also enhance your overall quality of life. You owe it to yourself to make sure that your hard-earned cash will go towards your personal goals and nowhere else. Determine Your Fitness GoalsMake sure to write down what your goals may be. These goals may range anywhere from becoming stronger to losing the last stubborn ten pounds. Different trainers come from different backgrounds, so their specialties will also be different. So before you even start looking for a trainer, it is smart to determine what exactly you want from them. A trainer with an extensive background in weight loss may not always be the same trainer you would turn to if you were looking to increase agility. Also, do not limit your goals to the physical plane. Consider how you want to feel emotionally about your body after starting a training regime. Research, Research, Research!Ask friends and family members if they know of someone that they can recommend. The best proof of a trainer's effectiveness is his or her portfolio of hopefully satisfied clients. Go online and see if they have a website where you can view testimonials of what clients have to say. See how many years of experience they have working hands-on with clients. Make sure that this trainer has updated credentials, and a valid First Aid and CPR certificate. Understand Personal PreferencesFigure out how many times a week that you can honestly commit to a workout program and the homework that the trainer should give to you to do on your own. Do you need a lot of one-on-one time, or will the remote guidance of an online trainer be enough? Ask yourself if you are comfortable enough to go to a more public gym, or if you would rather the trainer come to your home. You may even desire a combination of the two. Speak UpOnce you have a few trainers in mind whom you think you would like to work with, make sure that you schedule an initial meeting (usually a type of assessment) before committing to any type of long term package. This initial assessment usually comes free or at a reasonably discounted price. At this initial meeting, take note of such things as personality, personal level of fitness, and organization skills. Ask lots of questions! The trainer should be extremely knowledgeable and should be happy to answer all of your questions. However, the trainer could be extremely knowledgeable, but you also have to make sure you like your trainer as a person. You will be spending a lot of time with this person. If your personalities clash, you may start to dread your sessions instead of enjoying results. Remember that even hiring the best personal trainer in the world is no guarantee that results will magically appear. It will still take hard work, sweat, and commitment. But taking the time to choose someone capable to help you on the journey can make the road a little less daunting. It will also give you a witness and thus someone to hold you accountable for the health of your body. Train hard!
