Many people have noticed, especially as they age, the almost sudden appearance of strange marble-like bumps just beneath the skin called cellulite. Can anything be done?

Cellulite is the lumpy effect of fat deposits crashing against connective tissue just under the skin, giving the ugly dimpling effect. Cellulite occurs most often in women, people who are overweight and some may have a genetic disposition for acquiring cellulite. The cause of cellulite is not well known, but studies have indicated that there may be a hormonal component, which may explain why cellulite is found most often in women.

What are the Best Treatments for Cellulite?

As humans living in a technologically based society, people want answers and results. If scientists can send a man to the moon, someone, somewhere should be able to come up with an effective treatment for cellulite. After all, looking great is really important…isn’t it?

As with most anything concerned with fat on the body, a sensible diet and exercise is the best way to remove or reduce the presence of cellulite. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and low in saturated and Trans fat. Drinking plenty of fluids to keep the body hydrated is also important and helps rid the body of toxins. Aerobic and strength training exercise at least three times a week is very beneficial.

Sorry, no miracle cures yet. However, there have been some small studies on different methods to deal with cellulite, which is more cost-effective then undergoing liposuction. Liposuction is actually not recommended for cellulite because liposuction is best used for deep underlying fatty tissue, not deposits located under the skin.

Cellulite Removal Treatments

  • Creams that contain the bronco dilator aminophylline, caffeine or ivy extract have been touted as the new and improved way of removing cellulite. Some small studies have found that creams containing these ingredients do produce some results; however the creams would need to be applied continually as the results are not permanent. Also, they are astringents and can cause redness and itchiness.
  • Message treatments have also been suggested as a way to beautiful thighs, butts or arms. Something called Endermologie; a message treatment requiring the use of an electrically driven machine that uses suction and squeezing to achieve results has been in the beauty news lately. The treatments are 30-45 minutes long and additional treatments are necessary to maintain the results. These treatments are not only expensive, they are painful.
  • Deep message by a therapist trained in Rolfing, a type of message that involves the connective tissue of the body. Rolfing is designed to break down and restructure the connective tissue or fascia and muscles. The treatment generally takes about an hour and several treatments are necessary to achieve results at $60-$100 a pop.
  • Herbal supplements such as bladderwrack, ginkgo biloba and evening primrose oil have been suggested to help in increasing circulation and eliminating toxins from the body and therefore; reducing cellulite. Although these supplements probably won’t do any harm, no studies have been found that indicate they are useful in dealing with cellulite.

All in all, the best idea is to be sensible. Advertisements are constantly bombarding the senses illuminating the best buys for expensive miracle creams that get rid of every unwanted and ugly parts of the body from cellulite to wrinkles. There is no fountain of youth, no easy way of dealing with cellulite and no magical fairy that will make people beautiful forever. If people want a great shape and smooth body, it takes work and dedication, like anything else that is worth while doing.
