Commitment and consistency will always lead you to your desired goals. Even when it seems you aren’t making progress don’t quit, this formula always equals success.

As a personal trainer for the past 10 years, I have been asked many different questions pertaining to fitness, but the most prevalent question has been “how do I flatten my mid-section” or something similar. Seems people are still under the impression that there is a magic way to reduce body fat and not only that but target a particular area and focus on burning fat from that area.

I always answer that the best way to reduce body fat is with a lifestyle that includes some form of aerobic activity, strength training and a balanced diet. As you consistently move you body and feed it healthy foods your body will respond. Another factor I mention is that you cannot over consume calories and expect to lose weight.

It sounds simple but embarking upon and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be quite challenging. In fact it’s the main reasons many fail. There are many metaphors that truly emphasize the importance of patience and commitment. Draw on them when you need extra motivation. Here are a couple of my favorites: “How do you eat an elephant...One bite at a time. “You build a building one brick at a time”. These simple metaphors basically reiterate the importance of patience and consistency.

Ok, so we don’t really eat elephants but if we did, thinking about eating the whole thing at once could be quite overwhelming. On the other hand there are many brick buildings standing, this proves it can be done. Don’t expect to lose 50 pounds in a month, accept the fact achieving your desired goal is going to take time. That way if you don’t see results immediately you won’t get discouraged. It is absolutely crucial that you understand this; it can be the difference between success and failure.
