Lately there has been a lot of talk and curiosity surrounding the “size zero pill”. I’d like to offer some enlightenment. The size zero pill as it is called, is actually a drug used for respiratory problems in horses. It’s called clenbuterol. When used by humans the effects are an accelerated heart rate and an increase in the body’s temperature for extended periods. This rise in body temperature allows the body to burn fat even when not exercising. Sounds good huh, well there are some side effects.

Scientist at the University of Melbourne in Australia conducted test on laboratory rats and found (3) negative side affects from clenbuterol:

1) after just four weeks of use the rats endurance ability diminished

2) the rats heart size increased not due to muscle cell growth but due to an infiltration of collagen fibers in the heart walls, this increase in collagen fibers does not increase the hearts power but stiffens the heart, potentially leading to a reduction in cardiac output. This collagen increase could also lead to cardiac arrhythmias

3) the rats receiving clenbuterol suffered from cardiac-cell degeneration

Scientist concluded that clenbuterol is potentially very dangerous for humans. Some of the other side effects of this drug include increased heart rate, palpitations, tremors and insomnia. It may also cause a rise in blood pressure and an increase in anxiety. If you’re looking for a quick fix, remember there are none, none that are completely safe and without side affects that is. Are we so desperate for quick ways to reduce our body fat that we would risk our health in the process?
